The True North Initiative is a 7-day immersive experience for participants ready to go further. We spend more time in the wilderness, allowing more space for growth, and a deeper level of connection and community. Guided by veterans and experienced outdoorsmen in small, tight-knit groups, set across Florida's wilderness.
7 days, in small, tight-knit groups, for those ready for a deeper level of immersion and connection.
Veterans and active-duty service members carrying the weight of military service — whether you're just beginning to process it or have been carrying it for years. Up to 29% of veterans will experience PTSD in their lifetime; you don't need a diagnosis to belong here.
Our programs take place across Florida's wilderness, at sites selected for their natural, therapeutic landscapes. As we work toward securing our permanent wilderness property, these diverse locations provide different healing environments and challenges that enrich each experience — making every journey into the wilderness a new opportunity for discovery and growth.
Seven days gives more room than a shorter program — more time on the land, more time in conversation, more space to actually work through what you're carrying instead of just starting to name it. We're still finalizing the exact day-by-day schedule for this 7-day immersion. Here's the shape of it:
Arrival, orientation, and settling into the wilderness. Time to build trust with your group and start shifting out of the pace of daily life.
The core of the immersion — extended time in the field, deeper group work, and the space to actually sit with what you're carrying instead of just naming it.
Integration and transition planning — carrying what you've built here back into daily life, with a plan for what continued support looks like.
• Nature connection practices
• Peer support facilitation
• Mindfulness and stress-reduction techniques
• Evidence-based therapy from our licensed clinical partners
Throughout the program, we balance structured activities with reflective time in nature, all while maintaining a supportive environment where military experiences are understood and respected. Licensed clinicians from our clinical partners are present throughout, alongside comprehensive safety protocols, to support both physical and emotional well-being.
Reach out, and we'll help you take the first step.
Every participant starts with a short conversation with our team. That's where we cover the specifics — transportation, what's provided on-site, and what to expect from your program — based on where things stand and what fits your situation. Logistics aren't one-size-fits-all right now, and we'd rather talk it through with you directly than guess in writing.
• You'll receive preparation materials ahead of your program
• No outdoor experience necessary — we teach you everything you need
• All medical and liability forms must be completed prior to arrival
• Let us know about medications, allergies, or emergency contacts in advance
• Our team will call you personally to walk through any questions
• Comfortable clothing appropriate for the season
• Personal medications (in original containers)
• Personal hygiene items
• Government-issued ID
• Sturdy closed-toe shoes (hiking boots preferred but not required)
• Rain gear or poncho (weather dependent)
• Hat and sunscreen
Expect walking on uneven terrain — light to moderate hiking, with frequent breaks built in. This isn't a fitness test. Activities adapt to different ability levels, and alternatives are always available for anyone with mobility concerns. Let us know about any physical limitations when you apply, so we can plan around them from day one.
The True North Initiative is offered at no cost to qualifying participants. Our programs are funded through donations, grants, and partnerships — never through fees to those we serve.
• Expert facilitation and guidance from our team
• Evidence-based therapy from our licensed clinical partners
• Meals and accommodations
• Follow-up support resources
We believe that cost should never be a barrier to healing, and we're committed to making our programs accessible to every veteran and active-duty service member who can benefit from them.

After completing our True North Initiative, you can expect:
Research on nature-based approaches has shown real, documented improvements in PTSD symptoms, sleep quality, and overall well-being for veterans. That's the foundation our program is built on, and it's what continues under the care of our licensed clinical partners throughout your time with us.
True North isn't a one-time experience. Many participants return for another season after some time has passed, and as we grow, we're building new ways to stay connected to this community and this land.
Up to 29% of veterans from recent conflicts experience PTSD in a given year, with many finding traditional office-based therapy insufficient or inaccessible.
Studies published in Military Medicine have found that nature-based recreation therapy significantly improves PTSD symptoms, sleep quality, and overall well-being in veterans. Vella, Milligan & Bennett, Military Medicine, 2013
Our programs respond to this need by pairing our licensed clinical partners' evidence-based expertise with a natural healing environment many veterans find more engaging and less stigmatizing than traditional therapy settings.
Our team is made up of combat veterans, experienced outdoorsmen, and wilderness guides — patriots who understand the darkness and isolation of PTSD, the weight of military culture, and the healing potential of time in the wilderness.
Our licensed clinical partners bring evidence-based therapeutic care into that setting, so every program pairs real wilderness experience with real clinical expertise.
Together, this team is built to deliver a high-quality, well-supported experience for every veteran and active-duty service member who joins us.
